Here's hoping 2012 is a kind year! It's my THIRTIETH! BIRTHDAY! on the 4th. I'm not quite looking forward to this one. It's big. But I've heard it's a good one, so I'm thinking positive thoughts.

Halloween!

(I didn't make Nibbler's costume.) I couldn't resist the hot dog costume for the dog. Poor thing, she was humiliated. But we were photographed for the local paper, so she'll live.

Eamon is so into Star Wars right now...so it was only fitting that Fini be an Ewok to his brother's Jedi Knight costume. In an effort to be nice to myself, I purchased the little sweatsuit for Fini, then free-formed an Ewok hood. It took about 20 minutes, but people who know Star Wars could tell what he was, so that was all that mattered!

Eamon's costume, on the other hand, took days. After the success of last year's Buzz Lightyear costume, I figured I needed to spend some time and make something that could take a lot of wear and tear. I couldn't find a pattern for a child's hooded robe, so I used an adult's pattern, and graded it down to size. It was a lot of pinning and trying on, but the finished robe is pretty cute. I regret not finishing off the inside seams, so I might go back and do that. I've already had to wash it upwards of 10 times, so I imagine it's going to disintegrate if I don't.

The pants and shirt are a karate gi pattern, with a few little changes (wider sleeves and a different front shape,) plus a slimmer fit to the pants for my skinny little guy. I whipped out the "newtility" (that's seriously what he calls it--too cute!) belt in about 10 minutes from a folded over piece of linen and some "d" rings.

I think the best thing about Eamon's costume is the fabric--I used a few JoAnn's coupons and got 100% linen for 50% off. I know he'll wear the heck out of it, so a quality fabric was a good choice. Maybe it will even last long enough for Fini to wear!

He really loved his costume this year!

Trick or Treat Bag

Eamon was so excited when I finished his treat bag! I brought it with me when I picked him up from school, and he wore it on his head the whole way home. But he wouldn't let me take a picture of his new "hat," so we found a tree for him to pose by. He arranged the whole photo shoot, and told me which photos I could post. So here we have it!

Washi Tape Phone Cover

The other day I was planning to cross stitch an image for my phone cover. But I couldn't find a picture I liked, and I already had the clear case. And a stack of washi tape (love this stuff!) Enter "aha moment!"

(I wouldn't call this a tutorial, because I'm pretty sure my toddler could do this, but just in case:) I cleaned my phone, then applied the washi tape directly to the outside. (It's paper tape, and has a pretty low sticky-residue-leaving factor.) Then popped on the case, trimmed the edges with an exact knife--being very careful not to cut into my phone--and voila!

Made From Crazy

I'm pretty sure the UPS man thinks I'm made from crazy. Wild hair barely contained by my scarf (it's cute and vintage, at least,) flour all over my clothes, dog barking, and kids running/crawling to the door: the older one shouting, "the delivery bus is here!"

Oh, well.

I'm making chicken and corn chowder with sweet potato biscuits for dinner. It smells so good: garlicky, onion-y, and biscuit-y.

Go on, make the biscuits, you know you want to. The crazy is optional.

Sweet Potato Biscuits, about 20

Recipe adapted from the 3191 blog, originally adapted from Martha Stewart Living.

1 pound sweet potatoes or yam (one large one is usually sufficient)
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne
8 tablespoons unsalted butter (chilled), cut into small pieces
1/2 cup milk

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

Prick the sweet potato and bake until soft (about one hour...you can also do this more quickly in a microwave). Once the sweet potato has cooled, scoop the flesh from the skin and pass through a food mill, ricer or sieve. You should have about 1 3/4 cups puree.

Stir together the flour, baking powder, salt and cayenne. Cut in butter with your hands until it resembles a course meal. Mix milk with sweet potato puree and add it to the other ingredients. Mix dough, just to incorporate (I use my hands). If the dough is really sticky, add a touch more flour. Turn dough out onto floured surface and knead a few times. Pat out to a 1/2 inch thickness. Cut biscuits into squares, or use an overturned glass to make circles (we don't have special biscuits here, square works for crazies.) Place on greased cookie sheet, then into preheated oven and cook until risen and slightly brown, about 10 minutes (longer for larger biscuits). Serve warm.

Fall!

I'm so happy it's fall! What little bit of summer we had was nice and all, but I'm more of a sweater wearing, soup cooking, bread baking, candle burning kind of girl.

E and I spent a Saturday morning recently running errands and stopping off for a coffee/hot chocolate with our new books. Bliss.

We found out F's hearing loss has reversed itself--he no longer has to wear hearing aids! In fact, the audiologist said he has "textbook perfect" hearing! So, so happy!!!

I sent in my doula certification paperwork! Now I'm just waiting to hear that I'm certified!

Daybook:

Outside my window...the occasional car. It's Sunday night, so pretty quiet.

I am thinking...that I'd like the vicodin to kick in.

I am thankful for...understanding people.

I am wearing...pajamas.

I am remembering...that I have a lot to tomorrow.

I am going...to work harder at keeping the house cleaner. It's not terrible, but it's not as well-kept as I'd like.

I am currently reading...Anil's Ghost.

I am hoping...that I do not catch the boys' nasty respiratory infection.

On my mind...midwifery, doula-ing, a ton of projects that I hope to have time to finish, Halloween costumes (Star Wars!,) grocery shopping.

Noticing that...I'm much happier if I take the time to do a really good job with my chores.

Pondering these words..."Mama!"

From the kitchen...pumpkin bread, apple butter, applesauce, gluten free peanut butter cookies, peach BBQ sauce, vanilla honey peach butter, the last of the roasted tomatoes, fresh bread (in 5 minutes a day!) and butternut squash soup.

Around the house...so. many. freaking. legos.

FIni's first birthday was a few days ago...it's hard to believe he's already a year old! He's such a sweet little boy--always so happy. He says "mama", "gah" (car), "gah" (dog), "gah" (cat). He also meows and woofs at the cats and dog, and makes a very "chewbacca-esque" sound for cars "vrooming."

So, for his first birthday, Mama made him a little doll to carry around (well, hopefully someday he will...) It's the Koji Doll from Wee Wonderfuls book...so flipping cute!

I've jumped on the bandwagon, been sucked into the hype, gone all in, etc. I've joined the Farmer's Wife Quilt-a-long. This will be a total scrapbusting project for me, and I'm hoping to use up all my precious bits of fabric that I've been hoarding.

Though I'm not into baskets or bouquets, so I don't plan to make all 111 blocks, so I guess I'm more of a mistress than a wife, tee hee.

Keeping Me Busy

This little man and his big brother keep me so busy. In the past few months we've had some pretty heavy issues revealed regarding my boys' health, which are difficult to come to terms with, and so so so time consuming. Nothing totally terrible--their immediate health isn't at risk, and they're not in pain, but as their mama my heart breaks a little more with each new diagnosis.

But, chin up, and onward we go, right?

Today was good, after our weekly therapy appointment. We got outside in the sun to rake the garden a bit, in between the hail and rain storms. Eamon and I baked brownies--using walnut oil instead of butter so he could have some too. (It's really good that way--you still get the nutty taste, without any pesky nuts tainting the brownie--yum!)

The baby and I got out to the store for a little while. I bought a tiny Lord Ganesha for my dresser. I like the idea of having obstacles removed from my way, and being propelled on the eternal path. It's a nice idea; comforting.

Speaking of comforting, I just wrapped up the baby in the blanket I finally finished knitting. I love that my boys will always have little bits of their mama around. I hope they feel comforted by them.

Tomorrow--after more doctor visits, I plan to scrub my toilets. Onward on the eternal path, right?

Recent Swaps

I have been on the receiving end of some awesome swaps lately!

First up, Doll Quilt Swap 10. I received the MOST AWESOME quilt from Quilting Barbie. I can't even describe how much I love it!!!

Barb even included hexie piecing papers and some of my beloved Katie Jump Rope Fabric. The little card she sent with is just the cutes thing ever! I love it all so much, thank you!!!

Next up is the Urban Home Goods Swap, which I was lucky enough to receive from Sarah at Pings and Needles.

She made placemats for both my boys, with the cutest little monsters holding suitcases with each of the boys' initials. So flipping cute! And a napkin and a potholder! I can't believe the awesome extras Sarah included!!! Fabric, ribbons, sweets, postcards...it is all so great!!! Thank you!!!

Getting Ready

We're anxiously awaiting warmer weather: more time outdoors, planting the garden, playing in the lake, vacations, flip flops, and sun block...sigh.

For now, I'm content to start some plants indoors and sketch out garden plans, I suppose.

Painting has been on my mind, ever since I donated all of my acrylics to Value Village ("I'll never want to paint again, it's been over a year...")

So I bit the bullet and bought a small set of assorted acrylics, and a little pad of canvas paper. Finally! Now all the ideas that have been collecting in my sketchbooks are starting to get painted! I'm not sure what took me so long, as this has been a wonderful creative outlet for me.

My husband turned thirty recently, so we celebrated with a bunch of friends and lemon cake! (I modified a basic yellow cake recipe and used lemon juice instead of milk in the frosting. The inside was a layer of lemon curd. YUM!)

Outside my window...rain, cars. Seems to be a trend in these parts...

I am thinking...that I need to get in the shower. And eat breakfast. (2 cups of coffee does not a breakfast make.)

I am thankful for...family and friends.

I am wearing...mismatched pajamas and my robe. I'm freezing.

I am remembering...to take a deep breath and slow down.

I am going...to the Seattle Dog Show to spend time with my family.

I am currently reading...Look Me in The Eyes by John Robison Elder. Fantastic!

I am hoping...that I get some time to knit tonight.

On my mind...laundry. dishes. scrubbing the toilets (ew.)

Noticing that...Eamon is making more and more complicated "starships" out of his legos. I need to buy him more.

Pondering these words..."Mommy, watch this!"

From the kitchen...Costco pizza, Costco lasagna, Costco garlic bread. I'm being very lazy. But I'm feeding 8 people this weekend, so it's allowed.

Around the house...are little piles of clutter that are slooooooowly being put away.

One of my favorite things...Eamon's ability to entertain himself with crazy-fun games involving race cars, starships, R2D2, and his new Hex Bugs. He's all boy.

Catch Up

I've been busy. So incredibly busy.

I finished E's bed quilt. It's the largest I've ever made: a twin. It's mostly Cogsmo by Cosmo Cricket, with a little Flea Market Fancy thrown in. I'm currently working on a pillowcase to match it.

I made a camera bag for myself. Then gave it to my sister.

I made a new camera bag for myself. Which I've kept. :O)

I've been reading a lot. E was diagnosed with PDD-NOS, to go along with his SPD. F has a mild-moderate hearing loss. We're hoping they fit him for hearing aids soon.

I made baby quilts for Fini and Levi, which they received for Christmas. Fini's is mostly Far Far Away by Heather Ross with a little Voile from Good Folks by Anna Maria Horner. Levi's is Alexander Henry's 2D Zoo with a lot of other fabrics thrown in.

I finished a few swaps.

I received a few swaps.

I flew to Minnesota for my Grandma's funeral. For a week. With the boys. By myself. In a blizzard.

I bought fabric. (This is, of course, not all of it.)

I sketched. And sketched. And sketched some more.

Outside my window... rain, cars, a loud gunshot? (I swear I live in a nice neighborhood...oooh, there it was again!)

I am thinking... that it's been awhile since I found a spider in the house...that means Bigfoot's cousin is coming to visit soon, I'm sure.

I am thankful for... knitting--forcing me to slow down, take a deep breath, and concentrate on each individual stitch.

I am wearing... pink pajamas, no socks (which is very strange for me.)

I am remembering... the reasons why I wanted to become a stay at home mom.

I am going... to a special Mom's Night Out in a couple of weeks.

I am currently reading... the Frederick's catalogue. Oooh la la!

I am hoping... that the locking bin I bought today will keep Cashew out of my yarn. If I have to untangle one more skein of yarn I will maim her. Damn cat!

On my mind... that I need to be more patient with Eamon.

Noticing that... the damn cat won't stop talking. Loudly. In the echo-y stairwell. (Yes, echo-y is a word. I made it up.)

Pondering these words... "I bring the sun wherever I go. So you don't have to be sad Mommy, because the sun is stuck to me."

From the kitchen... a perfectly medium well steak, sauteed kale, and Gooey Cocoa Brownies. Plus Honey Oatmeal Muffins for breakfast.

Around the house... laundry is almost caught-up! The kitchen is clean but for a few dishes for in the morning.

One of my favorite things... the way Fini "sleep nurses," as if he's dreaming of eating. The way Eamon talks in his sleep. Random words and (sometimes a little creepy) laughs.

Back For Now

I'm feeling less like I'm being pulled in a million directions and more like a normal human being. (I almost typed "bean" instead of "being." Haha!) My blogging might be more daybooks for awhile, so bear with me.

Outside my window... is our somewhat busy street. It's cold, and night.

I am thinking... about my sewing machine and half-finished project.

I am thankful for... a sleepy babe, good friends, and chocolate cake.

I am wearing... jeans, tank top, t-shirt, and cardigan. Same as most days! :O)

I am remembering... last night. I *might* have been a bit tipsy with my girlfriends. It was a fun night!

I am going... to live more in the moment and less in the past, or future.

I am currently reading... Expressive Photography

I am hoping... to come to terms with my age.

On my mind... my 29th birthday (eek!) tomorrow.

Noticing that... I'm fighting my age.

Pondering these words... that I will "find myself" in my thirties. I certainly hope so, because I have felt lost for quite awhile.

The Weekend

* I'm spending the weekend in my hometown. Jes is not with me, so I have the boys all to myself. My parents, sister, and parents-in-law have been a great help!

* I spent the majority of the day yesterday at the ER for chest pain and a wicked migraine. EKG, bloodwork, and X-Rays were normal, though my SED rate showed an increase in inflammation--this time they're calling it costochondritis, and possibly pericarditis though the ER doctor couldn't diagnose it for sure. (I've dealt with inflammation issues for a few years. I have flare-ups every now and again [pericarditis and pleurisy were a particularly fun few weeks of my life] but no diagnosis of any _reason_ for them. [Though my husband seems to be convinced that I have gout. The ER doctor and nurse are not.] The past three months or so have been a little trying what with a flare-up and a new baby, to say the least.) I'm taking ibuprofen and vicodin, and it's under control for now.

*Last night I called our family doctor on his cell phone (how cool is that?! I have our doctor's cell phone number, and was told to call it if I have urgent questions. Sweet dealio, yo.) E suddenly spiked a fever yesterday evening. He had a few sips of warm milk, then lied down. He fell asleep within two minutes. His little body was burning up, but I didn't have a thermometer, so I don't know exactly how high. Tylenol round the clock overnight, lots of cool washcloths, and lots of cuddles later he seems to be doing OK.

* My mom and I had a holiday bazaar today, at my high school. It went well. Grandma showed off Fini to everyone in town. My sister and I were asked if our boys are twins. A lot. I was told Fini is not lacking in the meal department. A lot. (Yeah, he's a little, uh, chubby...) A few kids will be getting crayon rolls for Christmas.

* I spent a lot of my time today unravelling a shawl made from laceweight alpaca and light worsted weight quiviut (it's a musk ox) yarn for my mom. I stopped when my eyes were crossing. Then I crocheted a hat for myself.

* Tomorrow will be spent with family. Not sure yet with whom exactly, or what we'll be doing, but I do know that I don't plan to do too much. Except crochet.

* Monday we'll be heading home, where Jes and a couple contractors have been working on our upstairs bathroom (which deserves a post of it's own--but let's just say that what started out as a simple bathroom scrub-down has turned into a full-blown gut and renovate. Sigh.)

* After a long drive across two mountain passes, I plan to build a roaring fire in my newly cleaned fireplace, which no longer sends smoke into the basement. I can't wait to get home and cuddle with my boys in front of a warm fire.

Fini's Winter Hat

Fini's first winter hat, made by Mama. It's a tiny bit big, but he's so cute, and it's so soft and warm. Baby hats are so fun to knit, since they're fast and easy. It's hard for me to lose interest in these projects!

Halloween

I made three costumes this year. First, for Levi, I made a garden gnome suit. Complete with a fuzzy white beard! (Pattern--Simplicity 2323. Omitted the ring, and pieced together the suit to look like pants with a belted tunic. Appliqued craft fur to the front. Hat was an improvised gnome shape of my own design.) (Fini is modeling.)

Second, I created a Buzz Lightyear costume for Eamon. I couldn't find a pattern for it, so I used a pajama pattern, and appliqued Buzz's space suit shapes to the front. I added a fleece hood. His wings were a birthday present. (Pattern--Simplicity 2734. Appliqued the colors. Added a hood.)

Finally, Fini was the squeaky alien from Toy Story--you know, "the claw chooses who will stay and who will go." Again, I used a Simplicity pattern--modified to work. The hat was of my own design, with eyeballs, ears, and an antennae appliqued. (Pattern--Simplicity 2323.)

Outside my window...it's dark, and cars are driving by on our busy street.

I am thinking...that I would like to work on my sweater tonight, but I should really go to sleep because I'm getting up at the, uh, bum-crack of dawn to drive up to Seattle by 8AM. (I'm walking in the Walk for Hope.)

I am thankful for...more space.

From the learning rooms...that I can function as a mom, as well as *myself* and all the things that make me, well, me. As long as I eek out the time, making my own hobbies a priority, then I can still do the things I like.

From the kitchen...I canned applesauce and apple butter tonight. Tomorrow's dinner is already done, as we went to the Greek Festival instead of eating the stew I made.

I am wearing...my apron. (Over my clothes. Sheesh, get your mind out of the gutter!)

I am creating...ever so slowly I am creating a space that my family can grow up in.

I am going...to bed!

I am reading...still reading Eat Pray Love. Sigh.

I am hoping...that I sleep enough tonight to be able to walk all five kilometers tomorrow.

I am hearing...Better Off Ted

This is the sweater I finished while in the hospital for premature labor. It fits little Fini rather well right now, so I'm hoping to eek a few more photo opps in it before my chunky monkey grows out of it. (I just love his padded little chipmunk cheeks! His little thighs have dimples, he's so well-fed. I'm pretty sure it's the cutest thing EVER!)

Another entry in the Simple Woman's Daybook, as it's about all I have the energy for!

Outside my window...Sunny skies, chilly air. Fall has arrived!

I am thinking...not a whole lot. My mind has been compromised by lack of sleep.

I am thankful for...Lots of friends and family as we make the transition into a four person family.

From the learning rooms...how to help my older son be a good big brother. While still maintaining his independence. It's hard, and sometimes I want to toss him out a window. (Not literally, duh.)

From the kitchen...I prepared dinner from scratch (chicken and apple curry, and pizza) two nights in a row, and we had leftovers last night. Plus lots of fresh fruit. It's pretty awesome to not eat out all. the. time.

I am wearing...my own clothes! Said goodbye to the maternity clothes a few weeks ago! I love having a waistband that doesn't need to be hitched up every five seconds.

I am creating...hmmm...still working on this one as far as creative items are concerned. Finian doesn't believe in taking a break from eating, so I'm forced to find things to do while nursing a baby. And I've been working on making our house a home suitable for our new family.

I am going...to Target with a friend, then to my wonderful doula's house to visit.

I am reading...Eat, Pray, Love (I know, cliche for sure, but what can I say...)

I am hoping...that I can finish this post and still make it out the door on time.

I am hearing...my iPod on shuffle: Hands by Jewel, Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley, Hands Held High by Linkin Park, and Handlebars by the Flobots. Eclectic much?

Around the house...the usual: organizing, purging, cleaning.

One of my favorite things...the beginning of Fall, the promise of a fresh start.

Outside my window...somewhat cloudy skies, with the promise of a warm day for the spray park. And a little bit of a breeze.

I am thinking...that I need to try harder to be a better mommy while in the last stages of this pregnancy.

I am thankful for...a son who loves me even when I'm not the best mommy.

From the learning rooms...learning to cope with all the aches and pains the late stages of pregnancy are throwing at me.

From the kitchen...awesome food that my best friends have brought over for us as I am increasingly less able to cook for my family.

I am wearing...an orange tanktop and black pants. Soon to be changed into something more suitable for public viewing. :O)

I am creating...many knitted items. An organized studio space. And seriously missing my sewing machine.

I am going...to work on my house today. Getting rid of the crap that is bothering me so much.

I am reading...not a lot right now. Not able to concentrate on anything but short blog posts and magazine articles.

I am hoping...to get through this birth naturally. I've been so tired lately with all the work that my body is doing that I am beginning to doubt my ability to power through childbirth with no medication.

I am hearing...Super Why, cars, birds, the window fan.

Around the house...organizing, purging, cleaning.

One of my favorite things...freshly washed baby clothes, folded neatly in anticipation of Baby Boy's arrival.

I'm so happy to be off of bedrest. I know it was only for 8 days, but my God, it felt endless. I'm not quite 37 weeks yet, but with all the complications I've been having, plus the major depression which was worsened by bedrest, the midwives agreed that the best course of action was to take me off. So now I get to walk around, in the fresh air, or in stores, like a normal person.

One good thing about my stint with bedrest (well, aside from the fact that the baby is still safe inside me) is that I learned what awesome friends and family we have. We were fed lots of great and healthy food, my house was cleaned (even my toilet was scrubbed one day--only a true friend will do that!) and my kid was taken out to play.

But I'm so glad to be done, and have lots of plans for the next few days (weeks?) if the baby cooperates. Otherwise, we're ready for our new little one to come out! :O)

On Bedrest, Yet Again

I love how my midwife told my husband and me that my bedrest this time was partial. And then the nurse told me that means I can get up to shower, eat, and use the potty. I asked how that was partial, and she said I can sit up in bed, rather than lie on my left side the whole time. *Sigh* Only a few more weeks, and I know Baby Boy appreciates it.

But I'm still bored!

I have a basket of knitting, a pile of laundry to fold, a (very overdue) book, my iPod, and my computer. Going to head downstairs to get some hexie fabric (at the suggestion of Heather) in a few minutes, just to shake things up a bit. Oh, and probably my camera card to download a couple hundred photos...

I run into people who are anti-war all the time, living in a military town. Most of the time I turn and walk away.

Before my sister married a military man and he was deployed, before they had a baby, and before I watched her worry daily for his safety, I really didn't have an opinion on whether or not we should be at war. I had no personal reason to have an opinion. I still don't. However, now that I am experiencing her living this life, I definitely am aware that people are dying, and not in vain.

The other day I ran into an anti-war booth at a street fair. I looked at my sister looking at the booth, and watched her quietly cross the street away from it, pushing her stroller. And it made me mad! I marched over to that booth, asked the man why he felt the way he did, and when he gave me some pithy answer about God and the inhumanity of war and killing, and how there was no *reason* for people to be dying, I pointed to my sister and her baby stroller, and asked him if he'd ever thought about how people like my sister and her husband feel. "The war is wrong, there's no reason for us to be over there," was his response.

"You honestly think these men and women are giving up their lives for nothing?" I asked him.

"Yes I do," he said.

I asked him if he'd like to tell my sister, to her face, that the fact that her husband is daily in danger of losing his life is worth nothing. That there's no reason for him to be in danger of dying. "Well, no."

I asked him if he'd like to look at my two-week old nephew, and imagine that he might never know his father because he is fighting a war and could die. Would that make him change his mind? Or would he still tell him that his daddy being in danger of dying is all in vain? "Well..."

After awhile, as my voice became louder and louder and more and more people started listening in, I realized that nothing I could say was going to make this man change his mind. But that wasn't my intention, as I am fully aware that he is entitled to his own opinions. Instead, I wanted him to be aware that by belittling the deaths and injuries of our country's service people he is hurting people like my sister, brother-in-law, and nephew, not to mention countless friends and even more family.

In his reaction, in his faltering voice as he kept reciting how un-Christian and useless the war was, I could see and hear that I had at least made him think. (And I hope, maybe as uncomfortable as my sister feels when she sees and hears people who are against the war, ahem.) I lowered my voice and said, "I hope you realize that that young woman's husband, and that infant's father, are fighting for your country too. You may not agree with the reasoning behind it, but there is a reason, so maybe you should come up with a different answer when someone asks you why you are against the war. I hope you think about your audience before telling people how useless the war is." And I turned my back on him and walked away.

I know I didn't change his mind, but I felt a little better after telling him my opinion. I'm sure I'll see him again, or someone else who is adamantly against the war, but I hope that at least now maybe this man will think twice about his answer.

(Please note, I try to keep things light around here, but this is something that's weighing heavily on my mind.)

I'm feeling the need to simplify, to pare down things in my life to only the bare necessities. This was brought to my attention today, so today I'm joining in: The Simple Woman's Daybook.

Outside my window... grey skies, which should burn off to a 71 degree day. Perfect Pacific Northwest summer weather.

I am thinking... that I am running out of time before this baby is born. And that I need to clean (NEST!)

I am thankful for... the support of my friends and family. And a little boy who is playing nicely while Mommy "works" in bed (while nursing the coffee that my husband brought to me!)

From the kitchen... uh, someone needs to send over their personal chef until this baby comes. We have been eating out way too much lately.

I am wearing... pajamas, but I need to get dressed "for reals" so I can take Sarah and Levi back to the Army/Air Force bases to get him signed up for insurance.

I am creating... lots of knits. I have been obsessed with knitting this pregnancy--about to finish another sweater for the baby, and have been asked oh so sweetly by Eamon for a sweater for *him.* Specifically green and blue.

I am going... (crazy?) to run a lot of errands today. No place particularly fun, but maybe can convince the husband I *need* to stop at the fabric store?

I am reading... lots of blogs and magazines. Throughout this pregnancy and last I haven't been able to concentrate on long stories or novels. That will change soon and I can go back to reading entire books.

I am hoping... to keep this baby inside a little longer. 35 weeks is not long enough. (Though my body would like to be done. Bad uterus!)

I am hearing... my nasty cough, cars driving by, my neurotic cat, various playing noises from downstairs.

Around the house... oh, you poor, neglected house. Someday you will be clean again.

One of my favorite things... that my son wants to be just like his daddy.

A few plans for the rest of the week... midwife, chiropractor appointments, visits from family, organizing the baby's things.

(Nope, not mine yet--still incubating here. This is my baby sister's baby boy.)

Little L was born last Saturday night. He's a great baby! Good little eater, and loves to look around. He even lets his mommy and daddy sleep a bit, too. He has a bit of a staring problem, though. His little blue eyes are constantly gazing into yours, as if he's trying to sort out this whole "life" thing. :O)

They're home now, living with us while his daddy is deployed to Afghanistan. He leaves for the next eleven or so months, and then they will all move to his base in Kentucky.

I'm 33 weeks along and still gestating! Backaches, contractions, and migraines, oh my!

With my first pregnancy, I had what felt like a ton of ultrasounds. But with this one I've only had two. So the pictures from this one are like gold to me. Today we had another, and got the cutest pictures. This is his profile, with the umbilical cord resting on his forehead.

I was high risk with my first, off and on throughout the pregnancy. I found out early on that we were having twins. And so I grew attached to each. I lost one little boy around 10 weeks in. Which was incredibly scary because the emergency room staff wouldn't do an ultrasound because the focus at that early of a stage in pregnancy is on the mom, not the baby. That was Saturday. I didn't find out until Monday that I still had one baby left. And the radiologist who told me this was very abrupt and I cried. Some people should not be in a position to tell someone their child just died. After a cross-country move, I started visiting the hospital at 31 weeks due to preterm labor, and birthed him at 35.5 weeks due to premature rupture of membranes.

I've been fairly quiet here about this pregnancy, mostly because I'm afraid since I am considered high risk. I went to the hospital twice recently for pre-term labor, starting at 25 weeks. Thank you irritable uterus and soft cervix. I'm now 31 weeks and have since developed a case of gestational diabetes. And lets not even mention the unrelenting morning sickness and super low blood pressure.

I know it's not my fault, but I can't help but think that my body is incapable of keeping my babies safe until full term. And it scares me.

I'm also a bit sad because I know this is my last pregnancy. My husband and I aren't prepared to go through this again, so this is it. So I'm trying to enjoy as much of this process as possible. Sometimes I wonder if the kick I just felt will be the last fetus kick this body ever feels. But it's difficult because I'm so uncomfortable.

On the other hand, my sister is currently living with us and is due later this month. She's managed to carry her baby full term (she's 38.5 weeks along) and is so done with being pregnant that she's trying lots of things to move along labor. The differences in our bodies amaze and confuse me at the same time.

Being a doula is amazing. I'm amazed by how our bodies are capable of growing another human being. And then knowing when to birth them into the world. I'm honored to be a part of people's birthing experience, offering advice and soothing words to help ease their transitions into being a mom, dad, and family. Volunteering at the hospital offers a tremendous amount of experience.

I also hope that one day I will have the words and wisdom to help guide families and moms throughout the early stages of their loss if something goes wrong. I want to be the opposite of the emergency room doctors and radiologist who compounded my heartache and loss when my body wasn't capable of keeping my son's twin safe. Or when I had my son early. Or if I am unable to keep this baby to term.

At one of my recent hospital visits as a patient, there was a neonatal code blue. That means a baby wasn't able to breathe and his heart wasn't working. All the staff rushed in, and when my nurse came back in I knew by her face that the baby didn't make it. She explained that that was the third baby lost that day. We cried together. She because she experiences this often, and it's hard. Me because I'm terrified that this could happen to my baby.

But, as so often happens, I've managed to overthink my original blog post. I want to share my beautiful baby's picture, and focus on keeping him safe until it's our turn to bring him into the world. In the meantime, I'm going to hold my first son tight while he sleeps next to me, and his baby brother bumps around in my belly a bit longer. And who knows, maybe I'll be taking my sister to the hospital tonight to help her bring her first baby into the world.

Spider

I was trying to take E to therapy this morning, when I noticed a HUGE (no kidding, it's about 2.5 inches long,) dark brown, hairy Spider with long stalk-y eyes staring at me from the passenger seat. I turned the corner, slammed the brakes, pulled the kid out of the car, and proceeded to tear apart the car looking for him. Can't find Spider.

I called Jes to tell him what I was doing. No help. A Nice Man from the church came by and helped me. Can't find Spider.

I strip the kid down to his undies looking for Spider. I dumped out my purse. I pulled up all the carpets. Can't find Spider.

Nice Man calls the fire department. "Uh, yeah, I have a very pregnant lady with her small child here, trying to find a Giant Spider. Can you help us?"

Five minutes later the fire truck pulls up, and three giant firemen climbed out. Gloves on, ready to help me find Giant Spider.

They proceed to tear apart the entire car, carseat, glovebox, and all the little cubbies a Honda Pilot has. Can't find Spider.

They suggest I drive to the hardware store and buy a bug bomb. I'm all for it, but there's no way I'm driving that car anywhere. One of them offers to drive the car home, and E and I climb into the fire truck for a quick ride home. I tell him he'd better remember this ride, because unless he's a firefighter when he's a "very big boy" he's not going to see the inside of one.

By the way, I still can't find Spider. We're taking the other car to the hardware store and buying the biggest, nastiest bug bomb we can find. And I will get rid of him.

(No Spiders were harmed in this story. (That will be later tonight.))

(No, I'm not usually so scared of spiders. But we just got back from Eastern Washington, and I really hope nothing poisonous hitched a ride back with us. And it was all of a foot away from my son.)

Funny Story

OK, so it's not hugely funny, but it is amusing, for sure. :O)

Yesterday began at 5:45 when I heard the water running for my sister's shower. I got up, had my (weak) cup of coffee, and patiently waited for her to get out so I could get in. I managed to get a 5 minute shower before I had to be ready to leave to drive her to her OB appointment. Long story short, we were on time, and her visit went great. Though we both started receiving calls--during her appointment--from our parents. Thinking someone had died from the frequency of the calls, we called them back as soon as we were free.

Turns out, Mom's emergency was to tell us she needed to pick up a dog from an old friend of hers, all the way in Vancouver. Her plan was to finish her work day (until 6PM) then drive to Vancouver (it's normally a 6 hour drive, though with her lead foot she can make it in 4.5 hours) then drive home, stopping to sleep in her car if she was too tired, to be back at work at 9AM the next morning. Of course my sister and I didn't want her to have a fiery car crash, so we offered to drive down there for her, pick up the dog, and keep it until she had a day off.

Off we went home to cancel our (many) appointments for the day, to clear up our schedules for our new day trip.

In the car we go, three year-old and two very pregnant women. Of course within a few minutes the kid is sleeping and we're having deep conversations all the way there (what? Your deepest conversations don't happen in the car? You should try it!)

So, we get to Vancouver after several potty and snack breaks, stop at the nursing home, and find Gertie--mom's 92 year-old friend--practically in hysterics because she didn't want to give up her dog, but since she couldn't really take care of him she felt she had to. Feeling bad, I made sure there was a nurse there with her when we left, since her (selfish, rude, uncaring) daughters couldn't seem to be there when their mother gave up her dog of the past 11 years. By the way, Regie is a hairless Chinese Crested. Cuteness!

As luck would have it, we ended up crossing into Oregon to Portland so I could quickly stop by Bolt Fabric Boutique, which I've wanted to see but can't seem to justify making the three hour drive for just fabric (my husband soooooo doesn't get it!) Of course they're closed on Mondays.

BUT, I noticed someone inside, so my BRILLIANT sister knocks on the door, and after explaining our situation the LOVELY lady inside let us come inside, stating that while she couldn't actually sell us any fabric since she didn't have the authority, she'd let us look around. It was HEAVEN! So many Japanese and unique fabrics, as well as JALIE patterns and just LOADS of pretties to look at. Sarah even wanted to get into sewing after that (I'm not kidding--she wants to make things for her baby--yey!!!) After I tore myself from the fabric (it was hard, I really, really wanted to buy lots of things) we decided we were hungry (surprise!) so we started to drive back, looking for a coffee shop along the way.

Starbucks found, crisis averted. Though about halfway through our snack, we get another urgent phone call from Mom, telling us to take the dog back, Gertie is hysterical and wants the dog back. Were we in Tacoma yet? No, thankfully we had gone to Portland and taken our sweet time, otherwise I would have had to drive all the way back from home. OK, so we leave the Starbucks, Eamon telling me he DID NOT have to use the potty, Mommy. OK, whatever kid.

Of course, as I'm driving down the freeway, about to take the exit for the nursing home, I hear "I HAVE TO GO POTTY!" from the backseat. Oh God, I can't pull over here, there are cars everywhere, it's rush hour, and OH MY GOD! HOLD IT EAMON, MOMMY'S ALMOST THERE! Sarah's hysterical by now, this is so funny to her. I whip the car around to a parking lot, quickly waddle over to his door, pull him out saying HOLD IT FOR JUST ANOTHER MINUTE HONEY MOMMY'S HURRYING! OK, I get him out, yank down his pants and instruct him to pee on my tire, in the middle of the crowded parking lot. People in cars were looking at us funny so I tried to shield his naked little butt from their view. "But Mommy, I need a big boy potty!" "Too bad kid, just pee." OK, so now he thinks it's hysterical good fun to pee on Mommy's car. But the pants were still dry, so good for us.

On we go to the nursing home. We get there, unload everyone again, let the dog pee, and trek inside. It's dinner time. All the residents are in the dining room, including Gertie. So we walk through the tables, to get her dog to her, and she says, "You can't bring him in here." (Really???) Anyway, she's beyond happy to have her dog back, so we send her off and off we go, to fight rush hour traffic.

By this time we're hungry. The car is out of gas. We're tired. Cranky. We drive all the way to Chehalis, where I remember there's a fabric store I really want to check out. OK, I'm starting to look forward to this, maybe there's a silver lining to this trip after all.

And it was closed.

So on we go looking for a sit-down restaurant so I could let my beast out of the car for a bit, since he's starting to get a bit stir-crazy. Country Cousins it is. We're starving, so we order large meals. And pick at them because neither of us are feeling well at that point. The kid ate part of a roll and some milk. Really?

We finally made it home about 8:30 (after a phone call to my husband, stating that if he didn't take his monster child so I could go to bed I was going to pop out a baby TONIGHT.) Of course he agrees, and even installs a window fan in my sister's room so she can have cool air at night. I'm lying in bed, thankful to be home, when I start hearing shouts and loud banging sounds from downstairs. What the hell?

Not able to move well because of the nonstop contractions, I'm sitting up in bed, yelling "What's going on?" More loud banging noises from downstairs. "I'm starting to get worried, trying to haul my large belly out of bed, when my husband comes up and says, "I think you need to take me to the ER, I think I broke my finger." Oh God, really??? I look at the finger, asking him if he can move it. He moves it, big sigh of relief. OK, it's bleeding, but no stitches needed. "OK honey, it's not that I don't empathize with you, but I AM NOT taking you to the ER for that." Take some Tylenol, keep it on the ice, and we'll reevaluate in the morning.

And that was the end of my day. Finally.

Yep, it's done. Huge thanks to everyone who came out, and especially to my sister for helping me haul all my stuff in and out of the venue, and sitting with me all day long. And also to my husband for loading/unloading the car and watching E all day for me.

This is a mask I bought for E from World of Whimm, a local company run by a friend, Kayce. She makes the most adorable costumes for children! Last year I scored a sweet silver crown for E, which he loves so much he sometimes wears it to bed!

I look a little less than amused in this photo...I was desperately seeking my couch to lie down and "bedrest." Oh yeah, I'm on semi bedrest due to some (very) early (I'm currently 25 weeks) heavy contractions which started a few weeks ago, and landed us in the hospital earlier this week. Not to worry, baby and I are fine, just need to slow down a bit. Which is kind of nice, since I really do need some time to lie down and relax, after the past few very busy weeks.

Well, I've been working on my list. But I'm a little ADD about how I work, so I'm constantly jumping from project to project, and then I usually finish a few all at the same time. So, I'm currently working on:

For the Craft Show: Sewing Box Pouches, Pleated Pouches, Zipper Pouches, Crayon Rolls, Colored Pencil Rolls, and Patchwork Drawstring Bags. Whew!

For Me: Knitting my shawl...it's actually almost done!

I finished a bed for Nibbler, which is a tad bit small for my pug's bottom, but she still likes it. :O)

I also hemmed a pair of pants, which wasn't on my list, but always feels like an accomplishment. Especially since I had to get creative in my self-pinning since my belly was in the way. :O)

Ooooohhhh, and today I bought some pretty fabric! A friend tipped me off on a nearby store that had some lightning bugs and flutterbye on the bolts, so I headed down there this morning. I scored some dogs on blue (lightning bugs) and both blue and green ladybugs on brown (flutterbye.) Unfortunately someone else had called this morning and ordered most of the ladybugs--yards and yards of them--so not much was left. And the shop owner was really rude to me, so I won't be going back, but my fabric is pretty, so it was a worthwhile drive.

Yep, my baby sister is officially a Mrs.

And she's moving in with us next week while her husband is deployed to Afghanistan for a year. There's a baby on the way for them. I've no doubt in my mind that this will be an exciting, scary, amazing, and downright difficult time for them, but I know that they are going to do an amazing job. Congratulations Sarah! We love you!

(Or not, however you look at it.) I started these socks in January. This picture was taken sometime in February or March. I haven't worked on them since.

Things have been busy around here. I'm 22 weeks pregnant (it's a boy!) and still sick, but thanks to modern pharmaceuticals I can function. Now if I could keep healthy--stay away from me germy preschoolers!--and get my allergies under control, a lot more would get done. You know, like maybe I'd clean my house, or at least wash dishes.

I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't buy any more fabric until I had used some of what I already have. Though I'd better get sewing before Castle Peeps (Lizzy House) and the new Far Far Away (Heather Ross) are released. Because I will need them.

I also want these. But I'm being sensible and buying these. Because my already largely pregnant body is not cooperating with the whole shoelace tie-ing and strap velcro-ing. You know?

It's a rainy, grey, and cool day. Perfect for staying inside with the Little and watching movies. Maybe I'll work on my socks. Or not.

It's been very spring-y lately. I'm loving the warmer weather, being outside, doing a bit of yardwork, and having lots of "pimiks" in the backyard. E loves the nice weather as well! Here's hoping it comes back soon to replace the yucky, cold, rainy weather of this week!

Mole-Ass Cookies and Great Grandmas Fudge

I hate neglecting my little blog, but goodness my little parasite is making me so sick! We're about 17 weeks along and Cletus the fetus is now the size of a turnip. The morning sickness has not let up, and I'm still not in maternity pants because I've lost so much weight. The good news is that my weight has stayed the same for a few weeks, so hopefully I'll start popping out soon! We'll find out in a few weeks if we're having a boy or a girl, and I'll be sure to post that (very important) info when I get it!

I'm a little late posting this, but I promised some friends my go-to holiday cookie recipes.

Mole-Ass (Molasses) Cookies:

3 C + 2 Tbsp flour
2 Tbsp cocoa powder
2 1/2 tsp ground ginger
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1 C butter, softened
1 C packed brown sugar
2 Tbsp ground ginger
1/2 C molasses
2 tsp baking soda dissolved in 1/2 C boiling water
1/3 C sugar

Sift together flour, cocoa powder, and ginger (just the first 2/1 tsp ginger, save the second 2 Tbsp,) cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg into a bowl.

Put butter, brown sugar, and extra ginger into bowl of electric mixer. Beat on medium speed until fluffy. Beat in molasses. Beat in flour mixture, alternating with baking soda/water mixture.

Shape dough into a disk (or plop into a bowl like I do) and wrap in wax paper. Refrigerate 2 hours.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Shape dough into 1 1/2 inch balls and roll in sugar. Arrange 2 inches apart on baking sheets lined with wax paper. Bake 10-12 minutes until top is cracked. Let sit on baking sheets for about one minute, then transfer to a cooling rack. Once completely cooled, store in an airtight container for up to one week. Makes about 30 cookies.

Great Grandma's Fudge Recipe

1.5 12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 small jars (you want about 1 pint, but two of the 7-ish oz. jars works fine.) marshmallow cream (Fluff!)
4 1/2 C sugar
1 tall can (15-ish oz.) evaporate milk
1 1/2 cubes butter
1 tsp vanilla
Optional-1 C chopped nuts (we don't like our fudge to be nutty, so we leave it out. No crazy candy for us!)

Mix chocolate chips, (nuts, if you want them.) and marshmallow cream in a bowl, and set aside. It's messy, so I just do the best I can.

In a large heavy bottomed pan, bring to boil sugar and evaporated milk very slowly. Boil to soft ball stage (230 to 240 degrees). It's very important to get it all the way to at least 230 degrees, so keep stirring and don't remove it from the heat until it's there. Almost every time I think it's going to burn or boil out of the pot, but it never has. Trust me.

Pull off heat, and add butter and vanilla. Fold in chocolate chip mixture. Mix well--it should be a uniform color and texture (unless, of course, your fudge is nutty. Duh.) Pour into a buttered 13 x 9 inch cake pan (at least 2 inches high.) Cool and cut into bite sized pieces, about 1/2 inch. Makes a ton--so if you're planning to gift some of it, you probably don't need to double batch it. Grandma used to wrap a block in tin foil and we'd keep it in the fridge for days (or as long as we didn't eat it all--Mom has a soft spot for Grandma's fudge, hee hee.)

Happy Valentine's Day! It's a quiet day for us: Daddy is heading up to a movie in Seattle, and I'm still sick. I think my mom and sister will be spending the night tonight on their way home from Portland. So we'll celebrate V-Day later this week with a nice dinner out, when I'm able to eat again.

This past week has been hard--I've been hit with a nasty flu (not of the swine type) which has even warranted a trip to Urgent Care for an IV of fluids to help combat the dehydration. Apparently being sick 12 times in 48 hours depletes the body of, well, everything. Not to mention the weight loss, especially when combined with constant, unrelenting morning sickness. I'm down a total of 14 lbs as of two days ago, and my midwife is none too happy about it. We'll see what happens at my next prenatal visit. I lost 17 lbs with Eamon, and she was threatening to send me to the hospital, so hopefully that's NOT what happens now.

Thankfully, the fetus is OK. There was a little scare involving trace amounts of blood in a test at the UC unit, as well as some (ahem--severe) cramping, but I was able to go home after arguing with the doctor that I *did* promise to lie down and take it easy.

And also thankfully, the boys haven't come down with anything yet, though I am of course waiting for it. Just hoping I'm recovered to take care of them. Jes has been taking very good care of me, letting me sleep all day on the couch or in bed, bringing me juice or food, or comforting me when I'm gagging and sick. And also taking care of the little man.

I am also itching to get back to my sewing machine, as it has been way too long, and I have two upcoming swaps to take care of.

White Chicken Enchiladas

These have to be one of my all-time favorite comfort foods. They're quick, simple, and really, really good (especially when my mom makes them!) I'm definitely someone who throws things in a bowl without measuring, so bear with me.)

(No picture, because I can't take appetizing pictures of food.)

Jenea's White Chicken Enchiladas

2 Large Boneless Chicken Breasts, Cut into Small Cubes
2 Cans Cream of Chicken Soup
1/2 C. Sour Cream
1 can Diced Green Chilies
2 Cups Shredded Cheese (I like a Monterey Jack/Cheddar Blend)
12 Tortillas

Cook the chicken over medium heat with a few tablespoons olive oil, and salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat.

Meanwhile, mix the soup, sour cream, chilies, and 1/2 cup cheese in a medium bowl.

Spread a thin layer of the soup mixture in the bottom of (each*) pan.

I find it easiest to form an assembly line here: Chicken, Soup Mixture, Cheese, and Tortillas (Set your tortillas in a stack, separating between each to make rolling easier.)

Onto the first tortilla, spoon a few tablespoons of soup, then a few tablespoons of chicken, and a sprinkling of cheese. Roll the enchilada (I flip both sides into the middle, then using my thumbs flip the edge closest to me towards the middle, and roll away from me. Perfect burrito/enchilada shape every time!)

Place the enchilada into the pan, and repeat with the next tortilla until you are through. Squish them together a bit, keeping them all in a nice line.

You should have about 1/3 soup mixture left--spread that over the top of your enchiladas, and using a spoon make sure to slide some between each enchilada. Top with the remaining cheese (about 2/3 cup.)

Bake at 350 degrees for 30-45 minutes, until the cheese on top is bubbly and lightly browning!

*Makes 12 enchiladas--which is a triple batch for us. I put four in one pan for tonight's dinner, then four each in two pans, which will be double bagged and placed in the freezer for another dinner later.

This picture has nothing to do with this post, other than I will always consider Seattle my "real" home.

I thought I'd take a moment, in the same vein as Kerri and Heather, to tell a bit about myself...especially since I'm spending a weekend with them later this month. :O)

The Basics:

I was born in eastern Washington. I have seven brothers and sisters, none of which are fully biologically related to me. And we're from two different households, which is sometimes confusing when I'm talking to my husband about my sister for example, and I have to clarify which one. Or when I'm telling friends and I have to draw a map so they "get" how I'm related to whom, or how I can claim to be the oldest as well as a middle child. And I have two moms and two dads, which is of course confusing when I say things like "my mom did this," or "my dad does that..." Um, which mom? Which dad? But whatever, it all works out for me, I suppose. And for Eamon--lots of aunties and uncles and grandparents!

My dad has worked for Hanford since before I was born. So did my grandpa. In fact, most of my family who still lives in the Tri-Cities either works there, or their spouse or brother or mother's uncle works there. Anyway, I once took a course in college (Native American Literature) and I remember one day getting into a heated argument because I happened to mention that my grandpa worked on a very big bomb that may or may not have been dropped...you know? And the entire class turned on ME, like I, or my grandpa, had any clue what was going on when he was a worked bee. Apparently Hanford is a hot topic at UW.

I'm of the very noble Heinz 57 descent...I believe there are 12 different ethnicities that I can trace back a few hundred years...Dutch, Welsh, British, Polish, German, Chickasaw Indian, and a few more which are of course slipping my mind. But if you look at me, you see just a very pale, plain caucasian girl. It used to bother me, which I think was the main catalyst for me learning Spanish and spending a quarter in Mexico--I really wanted my own culture, since we don't really have any ethnic traditions. I've since realized that we make our own traditions, and what I grew up with *is* my culture.

I've been married for 7 years, and with the same person for 12. We've been together since he was 16 and I was 15, and yes, he was a football player and I was a cheerleader, so go, talk amongst yourselves...ok, done laughing now? Oh, and we have the same first name. *Sigh* Done laughing yet? Moving on...

I have one child, a boy, who is a very sweet 3 years old. He has Sensory Processing Disorder, which we are currently in therapy for and trying to learn to cope with. All of us--it can be hard at times. But other than that he's a very bright, sweet, good-natured kid, what I imagine any parent would want for their first child. Eamon was a twin. My other son's name is Tristan Elijah. I tell Eamon about him all the time so I don't forget. I'm also pregnant, with one little one on the way. Due in August. Life is going to be very different, I'm sure.

There's always some drama or another in a large family. I won't go into details, because I'm sure no one wants their lives splashed about to my little readership. BUT, I will say that right now is a time of beginnings as well as endings. I'm happy for some people, worried about others, and generally just...waiting...to see what happens.

I've surrounded myself with very good friends. We laugh together, cry together, and generally raise our children together.

I consider myself to have two "homes" one is where we live (let's just call it Washington state, since we're really from eastern, western, and central Washington) and one is where we lived (Boston.)

I used to be smart (no, really, before I had kids I used to do lots of smart things...) I graduated from high school, and the next week graduated from the junior college (running start.) I have a bachelor's degree. I've read loads of books, won lots of spelling and geography bees, earned books full of certificates, had titles such as "Foreign Language Student of the Year," "Liberal Arts Student of the Year," and "Visual Arts Student of the Year," exhibited in a few art shows, owned two businesses, been a manager, supervisor, crew chief, etc. Now, I'm "just" a mom with a small business who happens to practice as a doula, and I'm pretty sure I'm the happiest I've ever been, even if I don't feel as "smart."

Fun Facts:

I'm terrified of the dark. Like freeze in one spot, don't move until someone comes to get me or I have to move so the monster doesn't eat me.

My husband has banned me from watching any scary movies. It's just not allowed.

I occasionally have nightmares so bad I wake up screaming. Like a child.

I'm highly emotional, even when I'm not pregnant.

I used to be a nanny. And I loved it!

I want to travel everywhere, but am really scared of flying. Sweaty, puking, shaking, terrified.

I like to knit, sew, draw, paint, read, and do generally nerdy things.

My husband plays video games all the time. I generally make fun of him, but truth be told there was a point in time when I was ADDICTED to Animal Crossing.

I love chocolate pudding, cake, and ice cream, but generally do not like pie.

I like working in my garden. I even keep a journal for it. Geeking out, I'm sure.

I have a pug and two cats. Nibbler, Pecan, and Cashew.

I used to have a goldfish named Sushi and a snail named Escargot. But it was so hot in Boston that apparently fish tanks will cook fish and snails if you leave them in a sunny window. Just sayin'.

I'm pretty much a furby. I've had many classic sayings from this little trait of mine over the years: peachy keen, dude, wicked awesome, sweet, oh snap, your face, etc. It annoys my husband to no end. I also pick up accents. For example, I've never actually lived in Minnesota, but when I visit my family out there I inevitably come back with an accent. When I lived in Mexico, my roommate was from Minnesota. So I came home from Mexico with a Minnesota accent. "Is that your buddy in the chipper there?"

I can't, can't, can't identify a movie, book, or song. If something comes on the radio, even if it's my favorite song, 9 times out of 10 I can't tell you who sings it. Or when watching movies I can't identify the actor (unless, of course it's somebody REALLY famous, like Robert Pattinson...)

I'm a total twi-dork. I love love loved the books and movies. I'm spending a weekend with a bunch of lovely girls in Port Angeles for a Twilight sewing weekend. Laugh if you want, but I will have a good time.

I just asked my husband if I have any quirks. He said, "dear god, honey, you are a quirk."

And now I have to go pick up the kidlet from preschool. It's been a very quiet hour and a half, back to being "just" a mom now! (And I wouldn't have it any other way!)

Boston. It was fun. We visited loads of friends, shopped at favorite shops, and gifted a baby quilt. I'm done with snow. Seriously. I'll take grey, rainy, and misty over snow any day!

Baby #2 is kicking my bum. This is a whole new spin on morning sickness for me. And I'm exhausted. AND, I'm already in maternity clothes, despite my 8 pound weight loss.

We moved the bedroom upstairs and the studio/playroom downstairs. Much better for our needs! Our bedroom is basically put back together, but the studio will take a few days (see above, "Baby #2")

I am now an official card carrying member of the YMCA! Woohoo! I can't wait until I'm not too tired to take prenatal yoga! But for now I might just go float around the pool while the nice nursery staff watches my child. :O)

My awesome, wonderful (maybe a bit grumbly) husband cleaned my kitchen for me yesterday. :O))))) I was so happy!!! Now if I can keep up with the dishes and sweeping, maybe I will be able to cook meals for my family? Maybe?

The first meeting of the Seattle Modern Quilting Guild will be held February 20th, from 12-2 in Wallingford. Be there or be square (hahahahaha!!!) I unfortunately can't make it, but I will do my darndest to be there in March.

On the gardening front (well, there isn't any yet, but I'm starting to plan/dream) I see a plum tree, raspberry bushes, and loads of strawberries in my future. And of course flowers to go with the andromeda, rhododendrons, and rose bushes left by the former owners of our house. I'm really looking forward to my garden this year, letting E play in the paddling pool while I waddle around pulling weeds and drinking copious amounts of lemonade.

I need this for a very special quilt.

I need this, this,this, and this because...well...just because I want them, I suppose. :O)

Now, on to finish switching curtains and join my boys watching the football game.

Boston, and an Announcement

I'm posting from my iPod, so this will be short today. E and I are in Boston visiting friends and our home away from home. We are loving riding the T, eating our favorite foods, and hanging out with friends we hardly ever see. Each day ismore exhausting than the next, due in part to mama's serious jetlag and our announcement.

We're having another baby! I'm 8.5 weeks along, due in mid-August. So far it's been great, but full of morning sickness,for which I'm taking an anti-nausea medication so I can at least basically function. Eamon is excited to be a big brother, though he keeps telling me I have 2 inmy tummy, so here's hoping his child's intuitioni s wrong and I only have one sweet little girl, er baby. We don't know yet what it is, but I definitely would be over the moon for a little girl to dress up. But, if it's a boy, at least we'll have all the clothes. :)

Mommy's Birthday!

Tomorrow is my (28th--eek!) birthday, but we celebrated today with a trip to the bowling alley with some friends, my little sister, and her fiancee. It was so much fun!

Each year, I realize that not only am I changing, but so is everyone else around me. The year before E was born, I think we went with some friends to dinner, and I probably had some drink or another, and went home a bit tipsy. The next year and the one after that were while we lived in Boston, and Jes managed to pull off two surprise parties at the candlepin bowling alley near our house. We had lots of friends there, as well as our new baby. Last year, we were visiting Boston, and went out to dinner with friends, and got a little personal birthday cake from Finale.

I think each year it gets a little more fun, as our son gets older and more and more of our friends have little ones. This year we had THREE toddlers and an infant creating and adding to the general chaos and mayhem, and it was so much fun! Sure, there were tantrums (mostly from my little guy, ahem) but it was still good!

And of course aging makes me aware that I should cherish my time here and the people around me. So, as I pass this, the eve of my 28th birthday, I will remember to try to focus on and be in the moment, so that when I'm 82, I will remember each and every year, and all the people who surround me with their love and support.

Craft Show Recap

I've had a couple really great shows lately, but I'm so happy to be on a break for awhile. With Christmas just around the corner and family visiting, I feel like I'm running out of time. Eamon has been such a good boy lately, I'm sure Santa will be good to him!

E went with me to his first craft show a few weeks ago, the Indie Banditas Bazaar. He did so well, and I was so proud of him! He spent a lot of time in his "fort."

On another note, I am really digging my latest display for fairs, which is much more simple--less boxes and baskets, and more "just product." I still need to work on it, but I don't have any fairs scheduled for now, so that will wait.

And just so you have something (kind of) funny to think about: today I was running errands with my sister, and forgot to hide a Christmas present for E. Of course when I picked him up from school, he saw it and freaked out. So I told him that Santa asked Mommy to do him a favor and pick up a gift for someone, and that I still needed to wrap it, since because of the recession all the elves have been laid off. (Side note--my sister thinks I'm a total dork.)

Quick and Healthy Breakfast

I'm trying to eat a bit healthier, but with E in school (or just with E in general!) I need foods that are quick and healthy. Here's what I had for breakfast (no picture, because I was hungry and couldn't make myself go upstairs to get my camera.)

Cheesy Spinach and Eggs

2 eggs
2 C. raw spinach
Sprinkle of sharp cheddar cheese
Salt and pepper

Heat frying pan over medium heat, and spray generously with pan spray (like Pam.) Meanwhile, lightly beat eggs in a bowl with salt and pepper, set aside. Add spinach to pan and cook until ALMOST all wilted--it goes fast, and you'll be surprised at how much it wilts down--to about 1/2 cup.) Pour eggs over spinach, and stir together until eggs are cooked. Place on plate, sprinkle with cheddar cheese (I like sharp cheddar, but anything goes!) Serve with a piece of toast, or in my case, a mini croissant because that's what I had in my kitchen.

Crock Pot Recipe, Chicken and Apple Curry

This is one of my favorite dishes. Seriously, it's so good! And I don't usually like curry! (No picture, though, because I can't photograph food. It just looks icky.)

Chicken and Apple Curry

3 T. Butter
1/2 onion, chopped coarsely
2 apples, cored and chopped coarsely (I like the skin on)
1 sweet potato, chopped coarsely (I like the skin on)
3 T. flour
2 T. curry powder
2 chicken breasts, chopped coarsely
4 cups chicken broth
1/2 C. raisins (I like golden)
salt and pepper to taste

Turn crock pot to high.

Saute apple, onion, and sweet potato until apple and onion are soft. Add salt, pepper, curry powder, and flour and cook for about 1 minute. Add chicken broth, bring to a boil, then turn down to a simmer while you prepare the chicken.

Place chicken in bottom of crock pot, then pour sauce over the chicken. Sprinkle with raisins (if you don't want them plump when you eat them, wait until just before you serve. But I like the raisins to cook in the sauce.)

Let cook for at least 2 hours, but all day is fine too. Just make sure you turn it down if you're gone for awhile.

I serve this with jasmine rice, but we've also had it over brown rice which is of course healthier. I also like the taste of the curry with spinach on the side (sauteed in a bit of olive oil with almonds, salt, and pepper. Yum!)

You can also do this in a pot on the oven, just add the chicken to the sauce and cook on medium heat until chicken is cooked all the way through.

Studio Tour

So, we're in our new house, and after Thanksgiving, my priority has been my studio. I got to buy a couple of cabinets and some organizational-thingies from Ikea, but most of what you see I already had. Enjoy!

This corner is where I keep all of my threads, stamps, paints, and general art supplies. Also E's art supplies, which he can access as he wants (with supervision, of course!)

My table under the window is intended for both drawing/painting, as well as my doula studying.

Eventually E's train table (best Christmas present ever!!!) will go in this corner, but for now it holds both of our rocking chairs, which have seen lots of use in the past few days, for lots of cuddles and quiet time.

E's art corner, complete with cork boards so he can change out his artwork as he wants.

Mmmm...fabric!

The cabinet underneath the ribbon and zippers is full of inventory (shop update soon!) The black cabinet on the wall is easily removable so I can use it for displays at shows. (Clever, I know.)

My sewing table (excuse the mess, I've been busy!) The rail on the wall is from Ikea, and I luuurrvvvve it!!!

Slowly Coming Together

Our house is slowly coming together. Room by room, box by box, piece by piece.

Does anyone else feel like they can't do anything if their kitchen is a mess? For me, it's the center--the heart--of our home, and if it's cluttered I can't function. It's a bit like myself--if my heart is cluttered, I start to get depressed. Only a thorough cleansing will make me happy. So, with a bit of sweeping, scrubbing, and general putting away of things, I will slowly begin to be able to function.

Last night was the first night of our Advent calendar (we're a bit slow, what can I say? E doesn't care!) It's definitely more of a "countdown to Christmas" for us, without any religious meaning, but we do add in some conversation about the spirit of the season, etc. Hopefully E will remember the holidays as a time for giving--both things and acts of kindness. For now, it works for us.

Indie Banditas Bazaar, Take II

Last weekend was my second Indie Banditas Bazaar of the year, and though business was a bit slow (for me) I'll definitely be going back in February. I love the energy of this show, and all the talented people I've met. I didn't take any pictures, but imagine a big gym filled with 80 creative booths, and you'll get it. :O)

Over the course of the two days, I managed to trade for several Christmas presents, but of course I can't blog those until after I give them away...

I think the highlight of this trip was meeting Kathy Mack of Pink Chalk Fabrics. She is so sweet, and graciously handled my blathering, babbling self while I carefully (oh so carefully) picked out three bags of "scraps." Each bag was about 1.5 yards of fabric. I got some Wonderland, Katie Jump Rope, Lightning Bugs (!!!), and various others of which I'll try to remember to take pictures.

And of course, a big, big thank you to Kate Butler, who started this whole thing. She's my hero. Seriously Kate, you rock my socks!

We've Moved!

Nearly Moving Day!

Whew, it's been nonstop crazy here! We've been packing, moving, painting, buying, and building for the new house. I haven't sewn in a few weeks (I'm starting to get the shakes, I swear.) We're doing our big move this Saturday, so after that hopefully I'll be able to stop and breathe. For right now, I'll leave you with a few pictures I took at the Puyallup Fair this past September:

It was fun! I finished the costume hours before the first party (Simplicity 2788--the "lamb" view, though we were going for a doggy.) E requested a dog costume, then picked out all the fabric. He especially wanted spots, so I appliqued a few dog spots to the front. He loves it, and has worn at least the hat everyday since!

Catching my Breath

Wow, these past two weeks have been insane. In between packing a bit of the house, and studying for my Doula training, I have two mamas who will soon be having their new babies. Plus a family emergency (nothing life-threatening, just life-changing) so I needed to put on my "good sister" hat and deal with that. Oh, and did I mention that the college wouldn't let me reschedule my photography class? So I'm trying to be present for that; thank goodness tomorrow is the last night!

OK, so besides all of that, I've done...let's see...yeah...pretty much nothing crafty. Oh, I did knit 6 rows of my Noro scarf last night! And I had to tink back my flipping February Lady Sweater because I can't math. As far as sewing...I've put aside a few things to destash here or on Etsy...but it might have to wait until I'm settled into our new house...so yeah, pretty much nothing. Oh wait, I did spend 45 minutes right before my friend's baby sprinkle making a blanket a burpy cloths...OK, yeah, I'm pretty much pathetic on the crafty front right now. :O)

On a good note, we're starting E's individual therapy this week. He has been diagnosed with a Sensory Eating Disorder, along with a Sensory Processing Disorder. That just means that he has a hard time processing textures, temperatures, etc. Hence the two-year plus battle with food. Which has now progressed to not wanting to take a bath, or get dressed (or undressed.) And not in the typical, "I'm a three year-old so I'm going to fight you on it." This is scary as a mama to handle, and sometimes I feel like I'm at my wit's end, but thankfully we're in therapy now!!! I can't even begin to explain how monumental that is to me.

I'm still "taking a break" from my blog and shop, but you might have noticed that the shop has been up periodically lately. That's because I've felt OK enough to have it open. And I'd like to have money for Christmas gifts (since obviously I'm not making anything for anyone.) So it may or may not be open if you happen to look at it.

Buying a House

We are in the process of buying a house--for real this time, our offer has been accepted, and we're scheduling a home inspection for sometime this weekend. I'm feeling confident enough to announce it to my bloggy friends. I think. Wish us luck, OK?

Anyway, I'm starting to think of decorating the space, you know, once we rip out nasty carpets and paint over existing 80's-inspired (or are they actually from the 80's???) walls. I just love, love, love pretty much everything Erin does, and intend to copy at least this idea of hers. Except I'm going to paint E's table and chairs (and desk, when I find the perfect one) glossy tangerine to go with my robin's egg blue studio/playspace walls.

OK, onward I go to execute a baby sprinkle tonight for a very good friend who will, I swear, let me name her soon to be born child Apple. So I can call him or her Caramel Apple. I mean, really, is it so much to ask that I name someone else's baby a totally weird name? Really? (Meanwhile, Cashew, Pecan, and Nibbler are all cringing in the corner.) (Those are our pets, not human children.) (I swear.)

Good Things

I'm tired and a tiny bit cranky due to some fun hormone-related problems needing a new set of medications, so instead of whining about that, I'm going to list things that make me happy (in no particular order.)

1. Twilight mittens and a matching hat from a great friend.

2. An accepted Purchase and Sale Agreement.

3. Helping more great friends make their first house a home. (Love the purple walls, even though I'm always referring to them as "rum raisin." I really do!!!)

4. A diagnosis for my incredibly picky eater. After two years, we finally have doctors saying Eamon needs treatment for his Sensory Eating Disorder. Never mind that there are no open treatments right now, we have the diagnosis and that goes a long way to making this mama feel like she's not a failure. :O)

5. Paint samples.

6. Making "big girl braids" in my son's best friend's hair after bath time.

7. Kitten!

8. A happy little boy telling the kitten, "silly kitties, don't play with my cars!"

9. Planning a baby sprinkle for a very pregnant friend.

10. Getting all of my "required reading" books for my Doula certification. And getting confirmation that I'm registered for my workshop. Woohoo!

11. Fun fabric to make fun things for new babies.

12. Watercolors.

13. New stamps and ink.

14. Working through my to-do list (and being stopped when I run out of elastic--it's a sign of greatness, right?) (Or at least that I'm selling enough crayon rolls to warrant buying more supplies!)

15. Also running out of crayons (see #14.)

16. New pencil rolls to be listed in the shop!!!

17. Kind of starting to think of decorating a new house...contingent on a home inspection of course. So not really allowing myself to dream yet. But the 6th time's the charm, right? Right?

I finally, finally sent my doll quilt for Doll Quilt Swap 7. I had a bit of a hard time finishing it, but it's done and in the mail, along with some goodies for my very patient partner (who doesn't even know I'm her partner!) (It's a bit like a Secret Santa swap.)

Cat Toy Tutorial

With the addition of Cashew the kitten to our little menagerie, I needed a few toys to keep the kittens happy. In about 20 minutes I made three catnip-filled toys, which my cats are now happily attacking and killing over and over.

1. Gather all your supplies. I used two small fabric scraps (about 3" tall by 5" long) and cut out mouse "bodies" with a freehand shape that basically is half a heart with a rounded end instead of a point. Also, two small felt circle ears, a ribbon tail (with a knot at one end), poly-fil, and catnip.

2. Using only one of the body pieces, baste (or pin--but I don't like to pin unless I absolutely have to!) the little felt ears (both at the same time) to the top of the head, with the round end facing towards the center of the body. Baste the un-knotted end of the ribbon tail to the bum of the mouse, again facing towards the center.

3. Make a mouse sandwich: place the other body piece facedown on top of the piece from step number two. If you are more comfortable pinning at this point, go for it. I, on the other hand, like to fly by the seat of my pants and see what happens when I don't pin.

4. Starting on the bottom, run a straight stitch all the way around the body. If you want to reinforce the seams, you can go around again. But, make sure you leave a small opening--about 1-1.5 inches long--at the bottom.

5. Turn the whole body right-side out, poking the tiny points with a blunt crochet hook or other poking device. Fill with poly-fil and catnip. I left our mice a bit soft, and added only a tablespoon or so of catnip to each. Since Cashew is so tiny, I figured she'd have an easier time if I didn't make it too heavy or firm.

6. To sew the opening closed, you could do a slipstitch. But, since I was in a hurry, I didn't. I just mushed the stuffing over a bit and ran a straight stitch across the opening, about 3/8" in.

7. Et voila, new toys for the kitties!

I can't believe I forgot to blog about these! I made these from a Wee Wonderfuls pattern, Spaceboy and Robot. The pattern was absolutely wonderful to follow--so well written! I can't wait to try another of Hillary's patterns, maybe Ollie and Archie? Anyway, E received these for his birthday, and while he kind of glossed over them at the party (there was a lot going on!) he does sleep with them at night.

The fabric is Cogsmo by Cosmo Cricket with a bit of Flea Market Fancy thrown in. 100% wool felt, and embroidery floss.

The other morning I decided to take my bike ride earlier in the day. Boy, was I glad I did! I rode up a mile or so to the seminary, which looks over Commencement Bay, and took a few pictures. It is beautiful up there, and this particular morning it was just gorgeous!

E's Rocket Party!

My little boy is turning three this Tuesday, which, of course, is making me a bit emotional. But I am remembering that he is now referred to as a "Big Boy," as I am reminded at least thirteen times a day. So, with a few requests--a giant chocolate cake, a rocket, and friends--I set out to plan his birthday celebration. I tried to keep the party fairly simple this year, but did try to incorporate a bit of a theme--so robots, rockets, and space it was!

A bit of a funny thing: I keep telling E that his birthday is coming, so all this past week, he wanted me to open the door to "let Birthday in!" Ha ha!!!
