I finished a new shirt last week, one that after futzing around with the pattern fits almost perfectly. I used a dress pattern which I've had in my stash for years. Unfortunately, I cut out the entire dress length, then when I tried it on it was not at all flattering. So, I chopped off the bottom and took in the top (4 darts were not enough!) (And darts do not really look good on me--I've heard this from other people with, ahem, curvier tops too--and am currently searching for an alternative. Princess seam maybe?) I have decided that I absolutely HATE facing around the neckline and armholes, so after ripping out and re-doing the neckband facing, I decided to finish the armholes with a cute blue gingham bias tape, which was much easier to sew on than a fussy facing like the pattern called for.
I also made sure to finish all my seams with French seams. It's a small step that I'm finding is making a big difference in my finished items!

I have the same problem with darts. Princess seams really are the way to go. Much more flattering, and in my opinion, easier to adjust.
