(Almost) Happy New Year!

I thought I'd get this post in now, before I forgot on New Year's Day...anyway, I hope everyone had a good holiday, and is ready to begin a new year! We're still busy--or rather, I'm still busy--crafting away at Christmas gifts, which are turning into New Year's gifts. I finished the main onslaught, but now I'm onto items I had put off so I could celebrate the holidays with my own family. Sigh.

Tomorrow I pick up my friend from the airport, so we can ring in the new year together, and I can show her "my" Seattle. Then Saturday, we're all off to Boston--her to go home, and Jes, Bug and me for a vacation! I'm so excited to visit our old home, and celebrate my birthday (27!) at a favorite restaurant.

Once I come home in mid-January, I hope to really concentrate on my shop, as I've had a ton of ideas and no time with which to realize them.

P.S. It's not still snowy, but this is how far behind I am on my photo uploading. I'm awesome. :O)

It's Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas!

OK, lots to share today, read on if you dare!

Still plugging away at the Christmas crafting. Yesterday I made nine--nine!--crayon rolls for various little peeps in our lives, and some for the shop. An apron was completed the day before, along with some other goodies that I won't be posting here yet. That leaves me with: 5 knit hats, 2 pairs of handwarmers, 3 (possibly 4) aprons, 2 dishtowels, a quilt (gasp!) Since I am not Super Mom, these will not be done before the actual holiday, so some people will be getting "the idea" or "essence" of their Christmas gifts, in lieu of actual packages to open. Yep, go me! :O)

There has been some baking going on--this week is week 6 of my "no buying commercially made loaves of bread challenge." So far, I've managed to make some good, and some bad, loaves, but all have been mostly finished by my kind family, who puts up with my little quirks and idiosyncrasies so nicely (thanks, Hon!) Bug and I made Christmas cookies the other day. He helped me mix the dough, roll it out, cut the shapes, and decorate! Such a big boy!

I also managed to get some shots for a little photo gig:

OK, still with me? That's all I have to share for now. I'm off to knit at an all-day knitting marathon tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a few more gifts done. Have a lovely weekend!

Playing in the Snow

Playing in the Snow
Originally uploaded by Tiny House
A few days ago we went on a second search for springy playground toys, for a photo shoot. There was snow, and Bug decided to play in it. Though he refused to wear both his hat and his "hand socks" (mittens.)

We have had so much snow in the past few days, it's almost unreal! I hope we didn't bring in from MA! :O)

I was supposed to head up to Seattle for a doctor appointment today, but we made it about 2 miles before I decided to head home. So now we're watching movies and staying warm and cozy on the couch! Fun! Hope you are all having a lovely day, wherever you are!

Christmas Countdown

Felt iPod Case
Originally uploaded by Tiny House
What is it, like a week now? Sheesh! Better get moving!

Last night, Jes watched the Bug so I could work. And work I did, for about 3 hours straight. Oh, there was crafting, sewing, and photo editing (my first paying gig!) And of course there was a small break to bake banana bread and wash dishes. Of course.

This case is my third attempt to make a cozy for my sister's new iPod Touch. The first ended up being mine (it has a little red bird on it--so cute!) The second just sucked, and this one finally came out right! She has a Great Dane named Penelope, which she shows. She also has her own grooming business (and is the youngest person in the state of Washington to have a business license!) And she shows dogs for her clients. Yep, my 16 year-old sister has clients. Wow!

Anyway, it's wool felt, cut to dimensions that fit the touch, hand appliqued and embroidered, then machine sewn (right sides facing) and turned right way out. With a simple two button and thread closure. And a hole in the top for the cord to poke out of.

I hope she likes it!

Balance

bal⋅ance [bal-uhns]
3. mental steadiness or emotional stability; habit of calm behavior, judgment, etc.
7. the power or ability to decide an outcome by throwing one's strength, influence, support, or the like, to one side or the other.

Balance. We all need it in order to thrive emotionally and physically. But it's difficult to maintain, especially during what can be considered either the most stressful or the most joyful seasons of the year. I've had it both ways, and this year, it's somewhat stressful.

The last two holiday seasons have been sad for me, since we lived so far away from family and couldn't afford to go home. I didn't want to decorate, and giving and receiving gifts felt hollow and empty. This year, my son has every toy imaginable, thanks to ever-doting family and friends. So instead of focusing on the buying, I'm trying to make this year a mostly hand-made year. The one project I really wanted to finish for him, his quilt, will unfortunately not be done. Not with the loads of other things I'm making for other people. So I'll get it mostly done, and then finish it after the holidays. He will still love it, and not know or care that it wasn't done in time.

We're also focusing on the experiences of the holiday season. We decorated our Christmas tree together, and saw Zoolights at Point Defiance Zoo. We'll have the opportunity to meet with nearly every family and exchange gifts, which will be fun, especially since we haven't been able to do that. But we'll also miss our friends in Boston, and the small traditions we had formed. I'll miss having a giant cookie and candy baking and making session, and celebrating New Year's Eve at a friend's house just down the road. But we'll see them very soon after the new year, to celebrate my birthday.

Sunday night found me in the Emergency Room for another seven day migraine. This time with a most awesome shooting pain behind my right eye. I wondered if my brain would explode, and of course my grandmother's brain tumor was at the forefront of my thoughts. Of course, it's just a migraine, most likely brought on by lack of sleep and stress. By the time I managed to be seen, two and a half hours had passed, the shooting pain was nearly gone, I had sent my husband and son home, and the nurse was apologizing profusely. It was my first solo visit, and was subsequently very scary. Last night, after a very long nap with Bug, my headache was gone, but by the time I woke up this morning it was back. So I have two doctor visits this week to see if we can fix whatever the problem is. I suspect, though, that they will tell me to get more sleep and stop stressing out about everything. And really, I should. But try telling me that at 2AM, when I simply can't sleep. Or at 7AM, when my son decides it's time to "wake up, Mommy!"

So, the next few days will be spent trying to strike a balance, between living and celebrating the season. For that, to me, is truly the spirit of the holidays.

Tour!

I finally have my studio to a place where I'm comfortable giving a tour...so here you go!

Bug's art table. He likes to draw while I draw, though more often than not he ends up in my lap at my drawing table.

This is to the right of the entrance from the dining room:

A view of the whole shelves, plus my inspiration wall and ironing board (I finally get to leave it out all the time, yay!)

The rocking chair that Grandma Judy gave me. I sit in it nearly everyday--from it I can see Bug and all the trouble he's getting into--and knit, embroider, draw

This is my drawing/painting table. I feel so fortunate to be able to have a separate place to work on bits of art, apart from my sewing table. And yes, it's nearly always covered with clutter. I can't help it.

These are the built-in shelves I fell in love with when we first looked at this house. I still love them: especially the top shelf with jars of ribbons and buttons.

Here's my desk where Stella, my sewing machine, lives. Also all of our (yawn) household paperwork and such.

This is the window to the left of my sewing table. The little figures are things I've collected over the years.

That's pretty much it. If you turned to your left, you'd see the dining and living rooms. I posted all of these pictures on Flickr, along with my favorite parts of our kitchen, if you're interested!

Thoughts and Opinions

The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act will propose a slight challenge for me, as well as many other small business owners. "This Act, which will go into effect on February 10th, 2009, puts forth much more stringent safety measures for products intended for children under the age of 12.

Under the very important auspices of child safety, the Act may have grave unintended consequences: fewer choices for families who are looking for handcrafted alternatives. Many Etsy artists and craftspeople have expressed fears that they won't be able stay in business due to the burdensome cost of testing and certification pursuant to the proposed legislation." (From an open letter from Etsy to all sellers.)

As a mother, I think it's wonderful that toys are being tested. Hopefully I'll have to do less research on each toy that comes into my home (I can't tell you how many times my son has been given a gift that is full of lead.) As a Etsy seller, it kind of sucks. I love to make toys for my child, and sometimes a toy is something that other people want to buy. Unfortunately, unless I sell them illegally (I won't) I can't market any toys for children 12 and under. Unless I pay around $4,000 per toy for testing (I found this on another website--I'm not sure if the figure is correct, but whatever, you get the point.) I don't know what could be done about this, as it's going into effect pretty soon, but I do know that it puts a damper on what I do. Ugh.

Who else is affected by this? As a parent, how do you feel? As a seller? Anyone else have an opinion? I'm interested to know people's thoughts on this...

Deck the Hall Ball

Walking down the road
Originally uploaded by Tiny House
I took this photo a few weeks ago. I love the composition, and how my boys look together.

Last night, we went to a concert, Deck The Hall Ball. There's a web feed of the whole show (I think eventually, if it's not already up) here. It was so cool! We saw Aqueduct, Shiny Toy Guns, Cold War Kids, Death Cab for Cutie, and The Killers. So fantastic! My mil watched Bug for us, and we stayed out late. We had Seattle-style street dogs (polish sausage with cream cheese on a grilled kaiser roll, with sauteed onions. Yum!) We were so tired we came home directly after the show, without any thought of going to an after party. We're such old people. :O)

Christmas Decorations and a bit of Self-Reflection

Christmas Decorations
Originally uploaded by Tiny House

I'm slowly putting up our Christmas decorations. I actually added a bit to the mantle, but haven't taken a picture yet. Grandma Judy gave us a bunch of decorations; otherwise it would just be a tree and stockings for us. (We really, really pared down when we moved from Boston. Like half of our possessions are gone.)

A friend has offered us a fresh-cut tree (they won't be using theirs this year due to a rather curious 13 month-old!) I'm so excited! Once I get that, I'll be able to finish decorating.

Yesterday, driving up to Puyallup to visit some fabric and thrift stores, I had a bit of time to think, as Bug was half-asleep. I was rather depressed, and being quite negative to myself, which led me to wonder if I'm a good mom. Yes, I *know* I am, but sometimes it's hard to remember that as my child is schlepped in the car all afternoon, or throwing tantrums constantly, or hasn't eaten a single fresh vegetable or fruit since I made all his baby food. Welcome to the world of two year-olds, I suppose.

Anyway, after stopping at Starbucks for a much needed mocha, sketch book, and toy truck break, I was feeling much better about my role as a mom! Yey Starbucks!

My point--such that it is--is that all this self-reflection led me to think about what made my childhood holidays so special. I remember picking out our Christmas trees, the church pageant, hot cocoa (and coffee when I was older) with candy canes, the giant open house my dad's family held every year, complete with an awesome buffet, and of course presents, and falling asleep near the Christmas tree waiting for Santa to come (or maybe just trying to prolong the magical feeling once I was older.) And I want to recreate that magical feeling for my son, but I'm stuck for ideas. Do you have a favorite holiday tradition (or traditions) that I could try to incorporate into our holiday celebrations?

I hope all of you are having a wonderful, magical holiday season!

Giveaway Day!!!

(See, I told you to come back today!)

Today is Giveaway Day at Sew, Mama, Sew!, and I wanted to participate too!

Up for grabs is this little guy:

He's one of my little birdies, hand embroidered and appliqued. He's stuffed (ha ha!) with lavender and buckwheat hulls. He smells great!

His backside is made from a square of my beloved Flea Market Fancy fabric, and he has a little grosgrain ribbon loop which you can use to hang him up. (He looks very cute in my studio right now!)

If you would like to have him, please comment below! Be sure to leave your name and in which city you live, as well as a way to track you down (your website, etc.) I'll choose a winner at 8PM (Pacific) Friday night, and announce him/her the following Saturday. This giveaway is open to everyone, all over the world!

Reversible Quilted Table Runner

Table Runner
Originally uploaded by Tiny House
This is a table runner I completed just in time for Thanksgiving (actually the night before.) I had an idea in my head, and my finished item actually turned out! I was pleased!

I started with 10 fat quarters, 5 each of Thanksgiving and Christmas-themed fabrics. I was inspired by this project from the Purl Bee. I wanted something onto which I could set hot pots and pans and not worry about my table underneath.

The reverse side is Christmas fabrics, pieced in the same fashion as the Thanksgiving side.

Now that I've finished this one, I want to make an everyday runner with fabrics that match my kitchen.

Come back tomorrow to see what this little birdie's all about!

Busy, busy, busy

Oh the holidays. I love them, but they're hard to get through! We hosted 17 people for Thanksgiving, along with my mom and sister's 17 dogs (and two ferrets.)**

I've had a little cold, and have been moving slowly because of that. But I have been working on some new items for a shop update, as well as a few custom orders.

Other than that, there has been a lot of progress on Christmas gifts, but of course I can't show pictures of those... :O)

**They breed and show dogs. It's actually what I used to do before I moved out of my parent's house. Oh, and while 15 of the dogs are small (think Chihuahuas and Miniature Pinschers,) two of them are large. A Great Dane and a Doberman. Yup, it was a full house!
